August 2008

Hi Everybody

I hope the August newsletter finds you well :) My month has been an interesting and challenging one, but I’ve come into August with a renewed sense of optimism, and also of wonder at how the Universe connects the dots of our lives and holds us up even if we don’t realise it at the time :)

One thing I do want to natter on about a bit before you get to the articles in this month’s newsletter, is something that jumped out at me again and again in this past month. It is the “convenience factor” that seems to override common sense in majority of humanity; it is something I noticed while looking at possible articles for inclusion this month, as well as in myself, and really, all around me.

The thing that got me started on this train of thought was an email that did the rounds last month (you probably saw it too), about how micro-waved water kills plants. I got this email three times from different sources and though the sight of a: “FW: READ THIS OR YOU WILL DIE” kind of email, generally has me gnashing my teeth at the best of times, this time the mail made me think differently.

It wasn’t so much that I felt, “Well that’s it! If the microwave does that to a plant I am throwing it out!” it was more along the lines of – “Ok, so there is a slight possibility that this email might be true, but, will I actually do anything about it? And furthermore, will any of the people who were considerate enough to send me this informative, “FW: READ THIS OR YOU WILL DIE” email, actually do anything about it either?” Or will we all read it, cluck our tongues, consider that slight possibility that it may be fact, and go right on microwaving ourselves to death? I put my money on the latter…

And that was where the convenience factor came into it. Frankly, it is more convenient to use the microwave than not. It is more convenient to believe that the preservatives and colourants in our food stuffs are not the cause of ADD in children, it is more convenient to ignore the fact that margarine is poisonous, it is more convenient to ignore the fact that GM foods are killing us, it is more convenient to believe that our cell phones and sweeteners don’t cause brain tumours, or that our medicines don’t by and large do us more harm than good in the long run. It’s more convenient to look the other way in just about every aspect of our lives and when cancer does strike, or organs, or minds begin to fail, to blame some unseen hand of God, or twist of fate in our lives.

Someone once said, “Give me convenience, or give me death” And I’m starting to wonder if he shouldn’t maybe have said; “Give me convenience and give me death”... Why are we so obsessed with convenience? And when you stand back and look at the bigger picture, how is cancer, pain, illness and suffering convenient anyway?

What started out as morbid curiosity to see if I could actually refrain from using the microwave simply for the sake of convenience this month, aside from giving my husband something to tease me about :) - led me to discover that food cooked without the aid of a microwave is much tastier, takes almost the same amount of time and isn’t half as inconvenient as I thought it would be… food for thought maybe :)

Have a fabulous August!
Love and light

So Tell Me About You?

I met a friend of a friend when they included me in their lunch plans. My friend is a rare enough kind of bird so I could have anticipated that her friends would rise, exponentially, on the scale of non-traditional species. No surprise, then, when I was led into a home eclectically decorated with exotic remnants of extraordinary places. Not a spoon collection or snow globe in this riverfront bungalow. How about a coconut shell, carved into a totem likeness of my hostess; “a gift from the shaman,” she explained casually...read more

The Pleasure of not Being Perfect

When it comes to the belly – my belly, that is, - there has always been a slight protuberance for as long as I can remember. A little more than slight, perhaps. I eat well, mindfully that is – lots of avocado, lettuce, wild salmon, and chocolate mousse. When I forgo the latter for a while, the rise seems to subside, though never for too long. I concluded years ago that this gently bulge is part of the Housden shape. This Housden’s shape, anyway. It’s great to feel lithe, but a good mousse now and then is perhaps marginally better.... more

The Prophet - On Freedom

And an orator said, "Speak to us of Freedom." And he answered: At the city gate and by your fireside I have seen you prostrate yourself and worship your own freedom, even as slaves humble themselves before a tyrant and praise him though he slays them. Ay, in the grove of the temple and in the shadow of the citadel I have seen the freest among you wear their freedom as a yoke and a handcuff... more
