April 2008

Hi Everybody,

I hope you all had a good time during the recent string of public holidays :) I must say the Easter Weekend really snuck up on me this year, having come around so early instead of the usual April.

I’m not too sure if it’s because doing what I do for a living I have very little interaction with the “real world” - but I notice how every time a group of people are together lately all you hear about is Eskom and Telkom and how bad the roads are and how disruptive the Gautrain construction is, and the crime and the taxis, and a whole bunch of other things. You know the list I’m talking about quite well I’m sure… Anyway, what I have noticed is that everyone has their own personal pet peeve, the one (or two, or three or four…) things that they are more irked about than the rest; and when the discussion comes around to that particular annoyance, they have that many more stories or anecdotes about it than the rest of the folks at the dinner table…

I’ve been pondering this for about a month now. Why do folks all have more stories to tell about the things that really get to them? Why do they seem to have more bad experiences around those particular things than the people who aren’t as annoyed by said peeve?

I’ve been without a Telkom line for the whole month, (for the umpteenth time), and although it does come with frustration since the cell phone signal on the plot is really bad, it doesn’t actually phase me that much. And neither do the taxis, or the Gautrain construction, or the electricity outages… And I’m beginning to think it might be because I don’t really live in the “real world”. I’m beginning to think that it’s because in my interaction with people, I don’t get bombarded with some or another person at the office complaining about one thing, which would inevitably spark me off to complaining about another thing; which would in turn spur the conversation on even more, about something else that there happens to be to complain about. So that, coupled with my natural aversion to the news; appears to have me for the most part although aware of all these things, somehow pleasantly unperturbed. And furthermore I am finding that although I am technically removed from the “real world”, when I am out and about in it, I seem to get away with roaming around pretty unscathed. I don’t get run off the road by taxi’s, I have yet to experience a scheduled load shedding, and even though I have no phone, I’m getting by and mostly unconcerned with it.

I think as humans we are all “Natural Born Moaners”. We love a good moan when something is not going right, and we seem to love even more to moan about the things we can’t actually do anything about. That’s a lot more fun, and a lot less responsibility. So what’s the point? The more you focus your energy on something negative, the more you will be surrounded by it; you will see it everywhere because it’s always in the fore of your mind, or on the tip of your tongue. The only thing in our lives that we have absolute authority over, or should I say CAN have absolute authority over, is ourselves. The only thing in this world we can truly change is ourselves, and the perceptions we hold.  Moaning is a habit, and in this country we are all highly proficient at it. I’m not saying this country doesn’t have problems, I’m not delusional, of course it does, but you know what; focusing all you energy on those problems will just make them bigger and only make you miserable.

So this month, I challenge you all! :) Every time you want to be true to your ‘moaning’ nature, stop and think a while. Do you really want to surround yourself with that dead and useless energy, or would you rather invest your energy in something that could bring you happiness? Look up at a sunset on the drive home every now and then, and really see how pretty it is. Take a walk around your garden, and really look at the plants. There is actually beauty all around us, all the time, all we need to do is look for it. Look for things to be grateful for instead of things to complain about. Be mindful of where you invest your energy in this coming month, take stock of your words. Moaning takes up so much time that could be much, much better spent doing something that would actually make you happy…

Right, now that I’m done rambling… I have a few people that have expressed interest in doing the six week Meditation Introductory course, but I need a minimum of four people to run it. So I have asked them to please hold on until there are enough people that want to do the course. If you are interested in learning to meditate and how to use meditation to support the chakras, please can you let me know so that we can set a course date? The course runs over 6 weeks for approximately 2 hours for one night during each week, and the investment is R700.00, or R650.00 if paid at the time of registration.

Hope you all have a fabulous April, filled with beautiful things :)

Love and light

Living Congruently

Do you tend to compartmentalize all the different areas of your life? Career goes there, relationship goes here, spirituality fits there, and health … well, that’s neither here nor there. Or maybe your compartmentalizing is temporal instead of spatial in your thinking. During the workday you do what you must, this evening you’ll do what you love and have some fun, and on Sunday you’ll think about what it means.Or perhaps you experience a feeling of compartmentalizing thought vs. action: “I’m spending X% of my time thinking and Y% of my time acting.” When you view your life as a series of different compartments, each with different rules... read more

Killing Our Oceans

Newport, Oregon - Peering into the murky depths, Jane Lubchenco searched for sea life, but all she saw were signs of death. Video images scanned from the seafloor revealed a boneyard of crab skeletons, dead fish and other marine life smothered under a white mat of bacteria. At times, the camera's unblinking eye revealed nothing at all - a barren undersea desert in waters renowned for their bounty of Dungeness crabs and fat rockfish. "We couldn't believe our eyes," Lubchenco said, recalling her initial impression of the carnage brought about by oxygen-starved waters. "It was so overwhelming and depressing. It appeared that everything that couldn't swim or scuttle away had died." ... more

The Prophet – On Friendship
