Understanding The Chakras

As living creatures we are made up of a complex system of bodies that interlink to form our complete being. Central to these bodies are the seven major energy centres known as Chakra’s. The word Chakra is Sanskrit for ‘wheel’ and essentially, these centres are spinning discs of energy that process every facet of our lives, and govern our actions and reactions to all aspects of life on an ongoing basis.

If the energy centres are imbalanced we suffer on all levels; physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Now, considering that most people are still relatively new to the concept of Chakras, and what it really means to attain, (and more importantly maintain) balance within our energetic systems, most people go about their day to day lives with their energy centres severely imbalanced.

The main reason for this is a lack of awareness. Our physical bodies are much easier to maintain (for the most part) because we can see them, and because the discomfort of pain is something we all do our utmost to avoid, but our energy centres are invisible to us because of the frequencies at which they exist. An imbalanced energetic system is akin to having a wound on your leg that you are unable to see or feel, and a lack of awareness would naturally lead to the degradation of the wound over time. But then how do you fix what you aren’t aware of?

Our pain receptors and nerves are our body’s way of telling us that we have physical disorders; and our emotions and symptoms of disease are the equivalent of those pain receptors on the energetic level to alert us to imbalances within the subtle bodies or Chakras. Every cough, every sore throat, every back spasm, every blue mood, or despondent feeling is trying to tell us something, we just need to learn to understand the language of our body to start working towards better wellbeing.

Below is a list of the symptoms associated with an imbalance in the seven major energy centres, take a look and see what your body is trying to tell you...

The Seven Major Chakras

The Root Chakra

The Root Chakra

Imbalances within this Chakra will manifest with physical symptoms that have to do with the legs, low blood pressure, lethargy, weight and eating disorders, and either a lack of interest in sexual interactions or obsessive tendencies. On other levels you may find that everything seems to be stuck in your life, no matter how hard you work you’ll battle to make ends meet, or alternatively you may obsess over having enough financial security to see you through two lifetimes. Familial relationships will most likely be problematic, and you will have a feeling of being separate from other people, isolated or in constant fear of rejection. People with imbalances in this energy centre find it almost impossible to listen to others attentively and find that their minds are always on the next part of the conversation, or not even in the same room as it. You may have obsessive or constant internal chatter, which is rarely anything other than negative.

The Sacral Chakra

The Sacral Chakra

This energy centre is where masculine and feminine energies are found within us and it houses our ability to be creative, enthusiastic and discerning in life. How we feel about money and relationships is also handled here. When this Chakra is not in alignment you might find that you are constantly attracting co-dependant relationships into your life or that you give and give of yourself to others, and find yourself resentful when nothing is forthcoming in return. People with this kind of imbalance are inherently people pleasers and very concerned with how they will be perceived by others. Sometimes this will manifest as a need to keep up with the Jones’ or embarrassment about your own perceived status in life, or it may just be that you are constantly aware of what you think other people expect you to say or do in any situation. This fearful and crisis orientated mindset is utterly exhausting and a lot of hard work to maintain, which is why often people with an imbalance in this Chakra will find themselves becoming bitter and resentful after a time. On the physical side, imbalances will show themselves as frigidity, prostate or reproductive difficulties or trouble with the kidneys and bladder, amongst other things.

The Solar Plexus

The Solar Plexus

This Chakra houses our self confidence and works closely with the Sacral Chakra to manage our sense of self esteem. When this Chakra is not functioning properly we lead high stress lives regardless of our surroundings. This is the Chakra that is trying to get your attention if you suffer digestive disorders, stomach ulcers and insulin resistance. Spasms in the middle back area, trouble with the liver and migraines are also related to the Solar Plexus. Often when there is an imbalance in this region people will be prone to perfectionism in which-ever area they seek recognition, but somehow, no matter how much effort goes into any one project it will be overlooked by others. This is because we cannot seek recognition in the eyes of others; it will only be mirrored back to us when we truly have it for ourselves first.

The Heart Chakra

The Heart Chakra

Naturally this Chakra has everything to do with the heart region. On the physical it will pertain to coronary disorders, but also any difficulty with the lungs, chesty ailments and coughs. Allergies, especially to cats, are a sure sign that there is an imbalance in this Chakra. This is the energy centre that gives you your faith in all things to do with love. When this centre is out of balance you will have difficulty believing that love is reliable, or that you are deserving of love in the first place. Conditions will be attached to the love that you both give and allow yourself to receive. Often, it is an imbalance in this Chakra that leads to unhappy or unfaithful partnerships, and at its worst it leads you to believe you are being betrayed when in truth your partner is actually loyal. We also establish our healthy boundaries in this region, so a ‘doormat’ syndrome, or unhappy working or home lives are also symptoms of an imbalance.

The Throat Chakra

The Throat Chakra

This is our centre of communication, expression and will. Are you able to speak your truth in a peaceful manner, or does everything you say seem to come out wrong? Do you have a lot of conversations in your head with people, while the actual words never seem to make it to the light of day? Do your words get stuck in your throat or do they flow from you with ease and grace?  On the other side, people with an imbalance in this region will chatter endlessly about inane topics, going into the finest detail about arbitrary things, dominating conversations with babble, but saying nothing at the end of it all. Were you raised in a home where children were ‘seen and not heard’? Do you have difficulty with authority figures in life? On the physical, an imbalance will naturally show itself with a tendency to suffer sore throats, but will also pertain to imbalances of the thyroid, neck and jaw.

The Brow Chakra

The Brow Chakra

It is here that you are able to perceive Truth and to see a situation for what it really is. This centre is also known as the Third Eye and is closely related to intuition and clairvoyance, but there is much more to it than that. How we perceive our reality is exactly what governs our reality, and this is what makes balance in this energy centre so vital. Imbalances here will pertain to our endocrine system, and so will have a knock-on effect through all the energy centres below it. Do you battle with hormonal disorders? Are you prone to depression or headaches, or do you suffer from insomnia? One of the most obvious symptoms of imbalance in this energy centre is the state of your dreams; are they hectic and tiring to you, or do you simply have no recollection of ever dreaming at all? This is the centre that leads us to live our lives in a fantasy world, whether through escapism and flights of fantasy and day dreaming, or simply delusion.

The Crown Chakra

The Crown Chakra

This is the most abstract of the energy centres, the most difficult to really understand because it resides in the sphere of Mind and deals with our relationship to all things spiritual. It is an imbalance in this region that leads to a disconnection from our Creator, or at worst, atheism. This is the energy centre that governs our relationship to our spirituality. Are you unsure of what you believe? Do you feel alone and unsupported in life? Were you raised in one faith but find yourself stuck between two worlds without knowing which one to step into? This Chakra is also where we store our grief, especially at the loss of loved ones, which is why so often, when people loose someone they love they turn their backs on which-ever faith they previously ascribed to, and possibly even ‘blame God’ for their loss. On the physical it is hard to pinpoint exactly which physical symptoms are caused by the Crown Chakra because it governs every single Chakra below it, but in severe cases of imbalance, deep depression, suicidal thinking, mania or psychosis will be present. The Crown and Root Chakra work closely together to maintain our will to live, so often, in cases of suicide, a combination imbalance in these two energy centres will be present.
